Realism Tattoos

REALISM TATTOOS

The two basic styles of realism tattoo art are black and grey realism and color realism. Realism is the most complex style to draw, paint and tattoo. It requires a much higher level of detail and understanding of shapes, lights and shades than any other style.

Black and Grey Realism: This is the most common and popular form of realism tattooing. It uses only black ink, which is diluted with water or specialized solutions to create varying shades of grey (a technique known as creating a "wash"). By layering these different tones, the artist builds contrast to create depth. This monochromatic approach is highly dramatic and is often used for human or animal portraits, religious iconography, and classical statues.

Color Realism: This subgenre bursts with life by using a full spectrum of ink colors to replicate the true hues of the subject matter. Color realism requires a deep understanding of color theory, as artists must blend multiple inks directly on the skin to mimic natural lighting, reflections, and complex real-world colors. This style is popular for nature scenes, vibrant animal portraits, and pop culture subjects.
